Can I select an institution that I previously studied or worked at for my placement?

Yes. However, your application will be stronger if you can show that you will learn new skills and make new contacts. You need to demonstrate that you will be working on your ideas, and not on a project that belongs to your previous supervisor or boss. There is a section in the application form to input this.
