Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Saffiatou Darboe

Researcher at work

From the Lab Bench to a Global Stage: Saffiatou’s Transformative Journey

The Promise of a Dedicated Scientist

At the Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit in The Gambia, Saffiatou Darboe was already a vital asset. As the Microbiology Labs Manager, she was deeply committed to her work, overseeing critical processes that underpin groundbreaking health research. She was an expert in her field, yet she was driven by an even greater ambition: to directly address the urgent public health challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in her country. She knew that to truly make an impact, she needed to connect her daily work in the lab with the broader, population-level trends that drive disease. This ambition led her to seek out new knowledge and skills, a quest that would ultimately transform her career.

A Scholarship That Opened Doors

In 2023, that opportunity arrived. With a prestigious scholarship from AREF, Saffiatou embarked on an intensive three-week Course in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, hosted at her home institution, MRC Gambia. This was no ordinary training; it was a deep dive into the principles of public health surveillance and data analysis. Saffiatou learned to utilize disease-incidence measures, mastered the crucial importance of high-quality data, and became proficient in using statistical software like Stata. This training was a profound turning point. It bridged the gap between her deep expertise in microbiology and the epidemiological understanding needed to combat AMR on a wider scale. The skills she gained didn’t just enhance her resume; they enhanced her ability to think like a public health scientist, critically evaluating research and strengthening surveillance systems for the entire country.

A Major Milestone and a Groundbreaking Thesis

The effects of the scholarship were immediate and lasting. Saffiatou’s confidence soared as she applied her new skills to her work, analyzing routinely collected statistics and evaluating past research with a fresh, critical perspective. This momentum carried her through her most significant academic endeavor yet. She recently achieved a major milestone, successfully defending her PhD viva. Her groundbreaking thesis focused on the epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, and genomics of bacteria that cause invasive human disease in The Gambia. This work is not just an academic achievement; it is a vital contribution to the scientific community, offering new insights that can inform future public health strategies and save lives.

An Enduring Legacy of Support

Saffiatou’s journey is a powerful testament to how targeted investment in a single individual can create a ripple effect of positive change. By supporting her professional development, AREF empowered her to not only advance her own career but also to make a significant contribution to health research in Africa. Saffiatou Darboe is a shining example of the exceptional talent that exists across the continent, and her story underscores the critical importance of providing the right opportunities to the right people. AREF is incredibly proud to have supported her journey, knowing that her expertise will continue to strengthen health research in The Gambia for years to come. Following the acquiring of her PhD, Saffiatou currently serving as the ‘Diagnostic Lead and Clinical Microbiologist’ with the Partners In Health Sierra Leone..
