Employing (Home) Organisation: Institute of Medical Research and Medicinal Plants Studies
Project title: Building Expertise in Cancer Research: Molecular Synthesis, In Silico Studies, and Biological Testing with Hit Optimization of Kaurenoic Acid
Dr Guetchueng is a medicinal chemist, holder of a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry. She is currently employed as a Senior Research Officer at the Institute of Medical Research and Medicinal Plants Studies in Cameroon, where she investigates the anticancer and antimalarial properties of phytochemicals. By focusing on the discovery and development of novel bioactive compounds from plants, she strives to advance sustainable and effective treatments for cancer and malaria.
Summary of Project Destination
Chemotherapy is a widely used treatment that can be highly effective, particularly when cancer is diagnosed early. However, it often encounters challenges such as resistance in aggressive cancers and significant side effects. This underscores the urgent need for new anticancer agents. Dr Guetchueng will use advanced computational tools for the design, synthesis, and in-silico screening of novel kaurenoic acid derivatives. By combining these techniques, the novelty of the synthesized derivatives and their drug-likeness will be assessed prior to in-vitro studies. Her placement at the University of Aveiro will enable her to develop skills in drug design, synthesis, and biological screening, which will be applied to her future projects.
Summary of Fellowship Plan
The University of Aveiro, recognized for its excellence in biology and chemistry research, attracted me with Prof. Silva’s Molecular Synthesis group. During my placement, I will enhance my skills in designing and synthesizing chemical entities, alongside anticancer screening. The expertise gained will empower me to contribute meaningfully to my institute’s projects, as it provides an enabling environment to apply and further develop these skills, driving forward its mission to improve health and well-being in Cameroon.
