Unpacking Societal Inequalities Through Data: Dr. Sylvia Muyingo’s Leadership Journey

For the past five years, Dr. Sylvia Muyingo has served as a biostatistician and research scientist at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC). Her defining motivation is clear: using data to unpack societal inequalities. Yet, as an alumna of the Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF), she discovered that driving true change requires more than technical brilliance—it demands the conscious cultivation of leadership.

“We always know that some people are born leaders, but leadership can be cultivated,” Dr. Muyingo shares. “Whatever leaders we are in society, we have the ability to make changes for good.”

Navigating the Postdoc Wilderness

Transitioning to an independent postdoctoral researcher is a challenging leap, often lacking institutional scaffolding. For Dr. Muyingo, this phase meant navigating without a clear map.

“There was no structure,” she recalls. “Most of the postdocs were in the same boat as I was. The lack of structure meant that everyone had to find their feet.”

Engaging with AREF provided the missing framework necessary to transition from a capable researcher to a visionary leader. While academic institutions excel at imparting technical knowledge, AREF offered the essential soft skills rarely found in a syllabus.

“AREF offered the skills that could never be given in a class,” Dr. Muyingo explains. “How do you deal with people? How do you plan and manage your development? How do you then transform that to find the gaps within an institution?”

The Power of Self-Reflection

A cornerstone of her leadership training was developing a profound sense of self-awareness and active reflection.

“One of the great skills that I acquired is always reflecting on what I have accomplished. What did I not do, and why didn't I do it? What could I do differently?” she notes. “That self-reflection was a key skill for me to take on and have this personal development plan.”

Translating Leadership into Global Impact

This personal development and the strategic networking facilitated by AREF quickly translated into tangible success. Armed with refined leadership skills, Dr. Muyingo achieved a major milestone during the pandemic.

“This enabled me, as a data person, to win large grants,” she says. “My first real, very large grant was during COVID—the AI for Covid Global South project. A lot of it was driven by the lessons that I took from the networking within AREF.”

Today, Dr. Muyingo views leadership as a continuous practice of positive reinforcement and cascading impact.

“AREF propels you and motivates you to not just drive change within, but also to ensure those changes impact other people to grow,” she reflects. As she continues her vital work at APHRC, Dr. Muyingo proves that when brilliant scientific minds are equipped with leadership skills, their capacity to transform society is limitless.
